The "OE-A Roadmap for Organic and Printed Electronics" white paper takes a look into the future and presents the main trends, a variety of example applications and the challenges faced by the organic and printed electronics sectors. The common perspective of the more than 220 OE-A member companies and institutes is presented with respect to the further development of this young industry. The white paper shows the results in the fields of OLED lighting, OPV, flexible and OLED displays, electronics and components as well as integrated smart systems. In addition, the document provides an overview of materials, substrates, printing processes and further production technologies. The Roadmap is free of charge for OE-A members. Non-members can order it for a fee.

At their joint general meeting held in Frankfurt am Main, the VDMA Specialist Associations Foundry Machinery, Metallurgical Plants and Rolling Mills, and Thermo Process Technology announced the formation of a new joint association, the VDMA Metallurgy Specialist Association. The previous specialist associations are to be specialist sections of the new body. The overall Board of VDMA Metallurgy will comprise the Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the previous specialist associations. The designated Chairman of the Board is Dr. Ioannis Ioannidis, President & CEO Oskar Frech GmbH + Co. KG. Designated Deputy Chairmen are Dr. Christian Bartels-von Varnbüler, President Küttner Group, and Dr. Joachim G. Wünning, Managing Director WS Wärmeprozesstechnik GmbH.

VDMA Metallurgy represents 180 member companies. The total sales of the metallurgical plant and equipment sectors amount to more than 4.6 billion Euros (2016), with a total workforce of about 24,000 (2016). The sectors represented by the Specialist Association sold equipment with a total value of 2.3 billion Euros** throughout the world, also in 2016. The share of exports is more than 70 percent on average.

"The newly created platform expresses the joint commitment of companies in the metallurgical plant and equipment sectors to the further development of technologies for the metal production and processing value streams," said Dr. Timo Würz, Managing Director of VDMA Metallurgy, at the inaugural meeting.

** The nomenclature used in the official statistics does not reflect the total range of exports by the sectors of industry represented by VDMA Metallurgy.

Bearing World Conference - International Expert Forum for Bearings, March 6-7, 2018, Kaiserslautern, Germany - register now with discount: Bearings are the heart of the machine. Rolling bearings are an essential element in technology, the enabling technology wherever there is movement. This is as true for general mechanical engineering as it is for the automotive industry.

The focus of the Bearing Wordl 2018 conference, is on all aspects of rolling bearings, but this year will also include an interesting look at plain bearings. Reliability and efficiency are the core topics. With more than 40 presentations on ongoing and completed research projects along with reports from field operation, the conference provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of technology, research, and development, and also looks at future trends.

The globalisation of the industry demands more and more international networking of research and development work. With the Bearing World, the German Research Association for Drive Technology (FVA) initiated an international dialogue, an exchange of knowledge and experience in which researchers and developers from universities and bearing manufacturers come together with users and experts from the industry. The Bearing World is a forum for the international experts in the fields of rolling and plain bearings.

The General Assembly made the board younger, larger and increased the female representation. Two women are now among the ten-member committee.

Corinna Both is the second woman, after Heike Gothe, to join the Board, which now boasts ten members. She is the first representative of the "successor generation". New Board members also include Holger Hoffmann (Hauhinco Maschinenfabrik) and Karl-Heinz Rieser (Eickhoff Bergbautechnik). Dr. Paul Rheinländer (Eickhoff Maschinenfabrik) and Jürgen Peschke (Siemag Tecberg) stepped down.

The General Assembly also decided to increase the size of the Board. Alongside the ten selected representatives, up to three additional people with special expertise will be able to complement the Board in future. This will provide greater safeguarding during far-reaching decisions.

Lastly, the members also implemented the vote by the entire VDMA General Assembly to increase the election period from three years to four. The rules of procedure were adjusted accordingly. This provides the committees with more time to implement changes and reduce the effort for the voters.

21 company representatives came together on November 28 for the inaugural meeting of the new committee. The focus is on sustainability requirements and the increasing duties of care throughout the delivery chain, as well as the strategic integration of sustainability in the company.

The working group deals with the strategic topics of sustainability and company management under aspects of ecological and social responsibility, as well as examining all topics linked to the duties of transparency, documentation and due diligence of sustainability.
It sees its role as pursuing the following organizational goals:

  • Establishing a platform for cooperative discussion that enables more intensive work on the topics and promotes the formation of networks
  • Supporting members in their operative work, for example through orientation guides developed for VDMA members
  • Acting as a multiplier for sustainability topics by increasing the understanding of these topics among VDMA members and the general public
The actions of the committee are based on the 12 principles of sustainability in mechanical and plant engineering. At the first meeting, the participants discussed these principles in detail and compared them with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They then worked together to discover how the sector is affected and where it has influence. The result was an initial catalog of topics and an order of priority. Three topics were considered particularly urgent:

  • How can sustainability be integrated in a company - in policies, strategies and processes? Linked to this, how can a (stronger) commitment to this be achieved on the part of the management?
  • What are the benefits and USP of an integrated sustainability strategy?
  • How far into the supply chain can or must the company’s responsibility reach?
The working group is connected to VDMA Technology, Environment and Sustainability. In future, it will meet twice a year, initially at the VDMA office in Frankfurt. The next meeting is planned for March 19, 2018.
